2 Scottsdale Brush Fires This Week Sparked By Construction, Officials Warn
Brush patrols spotted smoke twice in one week and stopped a construction-related fire from spreading.
SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A single spark from welding or grinding equipment is all it takes to ignite Scottsdale's tinder-dry brush right now, and fire officials say it's already happened twice this week.
Scottsdale Fire Department brush patrol units spotted smoke and responded to two separate construction-related brush fires within the same week, both sparked by hot work, welding, cutting, grinding, torching or any activity that generates heat or sparks.
Quick detection by firefighters kept the most recent fire from spreading into nearby desert vegetation and threatening surrounding properties.

The fires come as extreme heat and low humidity grip the region, conditions that allow dry grass and brush to catch fire almost instantly.
Construction crews doing hot work in Scottsdale are required to follow strict fire safety rules as part of the city's permit process. That includes obtaining necessary permits, keeping a charged fire extinguisher on hand, maintaining a dedicated fire watch during work and for at least 30 minutes afterward, and clearing combustible vegetation and materials from the area.

Crews must also stop hot work entirely when conditions create extreme fire risk and call 911 immediately if any fire starts, even a small one.
Fire officials also warned that a fire isn't necessarily out just because the flames appear gone. Embers can linger hidden in dry brush and reignite quickly, especially in hot, dry, windy conditions.
Brush patrols continue monitoring high-risk areas across Scottsdale as fire danger remains elevated. Fire officials say early reporting and strict compliance with hot work safety rules are critical to preventing the next fire before it starts.
