Tohono Chul Presents Exhibition of Mixed-Media Sculptures by Michael Cajero

Event Details

Tohono Chul Botanical Gardens, Galleries, and Bistro, 7366 N Paseo Del Norte, Tucson, AZ, 85704

Tohono Chul, the vibrant 49-acre botanic garden, arboretum and nature preserve located at 7366 N. Paseo Del Norte, is pleased to present Michael Cajero’s “We Need to Dream This All Again.” This exhibition of mixed-media sculptures is currently on display in the Garden Pavilion through Friday, Aug. 28.

“Cajero’s works are powerful and magical performative creations, simultaneously baroque and surreal. They captivate and puzzle, transporting all who enter his dark sculptural worlds into a profound sense of wonder and hope,” said Jamie Maslyn Larson, president and CEO of Tohono Chul. “This project has been made possible by John Wells, and we are extremely grateful for his extraordinary vision and generosity.”

Michael Cajero is remembered as one of Arizona’s most unique, prolific and critically acclaimed artists. For 50 years, he concentrated his efforts on furthering the Arte Povera and Process Art movements.

Cajero’s primary medium included exotically patterned gift-wrap, brown corrugated cardboard, and shredded computer and document paper culled from waste receptacles. These cast-off materials, heightened with acrylic paint, became the flesh, hair and clothes that cover skeletons of thick, yet easily bendable aluminum wire. With unbridled energy, Cajero summoned his creations to life, directing them to act out universal dramas drawn from current events as well as the Mexican folktales that so impressed him in his youth.

“We Need to Dream This All Again” is now on exhibit in Tohono Chul’s Garden Pavilion through Friday, Aug. 28.
