I-10 Closure In Tucson: Palo Verde Interchange To Shut Down Permanently

TUCSON, AZ — The Interstate 10 interchange at Palo Verde Road in Tucson will permanently close at 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, as a major freeway reconstruction project moves forward.

The closure is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s $600 million I-10 Kino to Country Club project, which is widening and rebuilding roughly 3 miles of freeway southeast of downtown Tucson.

ADOT has described it as one of the largest highway construction projects in Southern Arizona history.

Crews need to close the Palo Verde interchange permanently as work continues following the demolition of bridges at Palo Verde and Irvington roads, ADOT said.

The closure marks a significant change for drivers who use Palo Verde Road to get on or off I-10. A replacement interchange at Country Club Road is nearing completion and is expected to open this fall, according to ADOT.

The new Country Club Road interchange is intended to handle traffic that previously used Palo Verde Road and provide safer access to and from the freeway.

Construction on the broader I-10 Kino to Country Club project began in June 2025 and is expected to continue through summer 2028.

When complete, the project will rebuild I-10 with three general-purpose lanes in each direction between milepost 262, east of Park Avenue, and Alvernon Way.

The work also includes rebuilding the Kino Parkway interchange, constructing the new Country Club Road interchange, adding a westbound I-10 entrance ramp from Alvernon Way and building an undercrossing connecting the North and South Kino Sports Complex.

ADOT says the improvements are designed to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and safety, and modernize aging interchanges along the busy stretch of freeway.

Drivers should plan for the permanent closure and check Arizona 511 for current traffic conditions and construction-related restrictions before traveling through the area.
