Summer is here, and the Tucson area is packed with ways to enjoy the season. From outdoor gatherings and local markets to community festivals and family-friendly events, there's plenty happening close to home. Below are some events and activities to add to your calendar. 1. Summer Safari Nights at Reid Park Zoo

When: Saturdays through August 8; 6 p.m.–8 p.m.

Summer Safari Nights have returned to the Reid Park Zoo, allowing animal lovers of all ages to experience the zoo like never before. In addition to animal encounters and chats with expert Zoo Keepers, the kids can enjoy crafts and games, face painting, inflatables and rides on the Jungle Carousel. Each Saturday has a different theme and live musical guest, keeping each visit unique and memorable.

2. Southeast Arizona Birding Festival

When: Wednesday, August 12–Sunday, August 16; see schedule for specific event times

Where: DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tucson – Reid Park | 445 S Alvernon Wy, Tucson

Hosted by the Tucson Bird Alliance, the Southeast Arizona Birding Festival brings together avian enthusiasts to learn about and celebrate the area’s unique species. Attendees can enjoy expert-led field trips, workshops and a nature expo, along with social events and happy hours. Registration is currently open and strongly encouraged to reserve a spot.

3. Chillin’ at the Chul

When: Fridays and Saturdays through August 28; 6 p.m.–9 p.m.

Where: Tohono Chul | 7366 North Paseo del Norte, Tucson

The stunning grounds at Tohono Chul become the backdrop for a cool summer evening in the gardens, perfect for the whole family. Enjoy live music, cold drinks and tasty eats, along with activities like paint and sip sessions and silent disco dance parties.

4. Cool Summer Nights at the Desert Museum

When: Saturdays through August 29; open until 10 p.m.

Where: Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum | 2021 N Kinney Rd, Tucson

On summer Saturday nights, the Desert Museum comes alive with nocturnal animals, special activities and plenty of opportunities to learn and explore. Nightly offerings include the stingray touch exhibit and the children’s Packrat Playhouse, along with live music and lessons from Museum Docents. There are also different themes for each evening, with unique activities and signature drinks (for guests age 21+).

5. Tucson Summer Night Markets at Old Tucson

When: Saturdays, June 27, July 11 and 25, August 8 and 22, September 5; 6:30 p.m.–10 p.m.

Where: Old Tucson | 201 S Kinney Rd, Tucson

Twice a month, all summer long, the Old Tucson film studio and theme park transforms into a vibrant night market. Each evening includes over 45 local vendors showcasing food, art, crafts and more, along with live music at the Grand Palace. Admission and parking are free; access to rides, stunt shows and carnival games is available for an additional fee.

6. Tucson Village Farm’s Midweek Market

When: Every Wednesday (closed in August); 4 p.m.–6 p.m.

Where: Tucson Village Farm, The University of Arizona | 2201 E Roger Rd, Tucson

This year-round farmer’s market sells seasonal produce grown right on the farm, along with soups, focaccia bread, salad, cookies and more. Guests are encouraged to come early for limited-quantity items, such as eggs; for the most up-to-date weekly offerings, keep an eye on the farm’s Facebook page.
