5-Year-Old Drowns In Shasta Lake: Authorities

The boy went underwater without a life jacket before his parents could remove him from the lake, authorities said.

SHASTA COUNTY, CA — A 5-year-old drowned Monday in Shasta Lake, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel responded just before 11:30 a.m. to Turntable Bay, where they learned the boy went underwater without a life jacket before his parents could remove him from the lake and put on his personal flotation device, authorities said.

He was recovered with the aid of divers about an hour later, according to authorities, and was released to the Shasta County Coroner’s Office, although no foul play is suspected.

Responding agencies included the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE, the U.S. Forest Service and California Highway Patrol Air Operations.

“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine outing can become tragic,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that, although we have seen warmer temperatures this spring, water temperatures will remain extremely cold for the foreseeable future. Additionally, the public is encouraged to check the condition of all boating equipment, including safety gear, to ensure it is in proper working condition.”
