Major Housewares Brand Expanding As 22 New Stores Open — Including 2 In CA

The stores fall under a new format and are integrated with a home organization retailer that the brand is acquiring.

Bed Bath & Beyond recently announced the launch of its first stores under its new Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store format, including two in California, after the home goods retailer reached an agreement to acquire The Container Store earlier this year.

The new stores combine Bed Bath & Beyond's bedding, bath, kitchen, entertaining and other offerings with The Container Store's focus on organization, custom spaces and in-home services.

As part of the merger, The Container Store announced in April that 98 of its locations would integrate Bed Bath & Beyond products into its stores. The first 22 locations were set to open under the new format as of June 18, Bed Bath & Beyond recently announced, with additional stores expected to convert to the new format over the coming weeks.

In California, two locations opened last week in Costa Mesa and Century City in Los Angeles. Another 10 stores are expected to eventually switch to the new format in Corte Madera, Palo Alto, Sacramento, San Diego, El Segundo, San Francisco, San Jose, San Mateo, Walnut Creek and Woodland Hills.

The announcement of the new format coming to California occurred less than a year after Executive Chairman Marcus Lemonis in August said in a statement that the company would not open or operate stores in the state on the grounds that California "has created one of the most overregulated, expensive, and risky environments for businesses in America."

Golden State officials in April touted the news of Bed Bath & Beyond's return.

“There’s a lot of profit to be made in California — and we’re thrilled that Bed, Bath & Beyond is opening stores in the Golden State and taking advantage of the benefits of the world’s fastest-growing economy," Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a news release.

Bed Bath & Beyond also announced this week that it would honor any Bed Bath & Beyond coupon, no matter how old, at Bed Bath & Beyond + The Container Store and Kirkland’s Home locations through July 13, with prizes up to a $100,000 value for lucky coupon users.
