2 Injured, Driver Arrested After North County Freeway Crash Escalates Into Violent Assault: CHP

CARLSBAD, CA — One person was arrested and two people were hospitalized after a freeway crash in Carlsbad escalated into a violent assault and stabbing, authorities said.

Officers responded at 7:07 p.m. Sunday to a crash on the Tamarack Avenue off-ramp from northbound Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Investigators said a black Chevrolet Colorado and a white Chevrolet Silverado collided on the off-ramp. After the crash, the driver of the Colorado, identified as 49-year-old Orlando Query Chavez, allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old woman and stabbed a 27-year-old man, both of whom were inside the Silverado.

Chavez then fled the scene in his vehicle, according to the CHP.

Both victims were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Officers from the Oceanside Police Department later located Chavez and his vehicle and turned him over to CHP detectives. He was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and assault charges.
