BART Platform Shooting In Contra Costa Injures 3, Arrest Reveals New Details: Report

CONTRA COSTA, CA — Police have identified a suspect in the unsettling rush hour shooting that began with an argument, wounded several riders, and shut down service around the Bay Area.

Police are still searching for one of the two suspects involved in the argument, which erupted Monday into gunfire on a BART to Antioch transfer platform in Pittsburg.

BART police responded to the scene at about 5:25 p.m.

Paramedics took three victims to local hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to BART.

One suspect was arrested near where the argument began.

BART police officers on their regular patrol of Pittsburg/Bay Point Station intercepted Xavier Johnson, 22, of Pittsburg, on the trackway as he fled. Police continue to search for a second suspect.

Real-time messages on BART social media and dispatcher audio captured a hectic, frightening scene.

Dispatch audio reported someone witnessing gunfire on the platform. Another report described a man dressed in black running with a gun.

Dispatch audio captured the initial reports from the scene.

"Someone saw gunfire on transfer platform," a dispatcher said, according to ABC7News.

Another dispatch report stated: "man seen running in all black with a gun,"ABC7 News reported.

BART suspended service between North Concord/Martinez and Antioch while crime scene technicians worked on the platform.

Riders headed toward Antioch had to leave trains at Pittsburg/Bay Point, where they waited in long lines for buses or sought other rides, according to reports.

A rider, William Lane of Antioch, was returning home from San Francisco when he learned what happened from a text message. “I checked my phone. It said it was a shooting in Pittsburg. I was like, woah...” Lane told ABC7 News.

"It was a little scary because this is the commute I take every day," Antioch resident Tyler Johnston told ABC7 News.

Tri Delta Transit provided buses for stranded riders.

Trains resumed running between North Concord/Martinez and Pittsburg/Bay Point first.

Service returning to its regular schedule Tuesday morning.

Police have released no further details about the two people believed to be involved, and the investigation continues.
