Homicide Suspect Wanted, Flees After Shooting: Contra Costa Sheriff

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Contra Costa County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a homicide suspect after an early morning shooting in Bay Point left one person dead and another injured.

At about 1:30 a.m., deputies assigned to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office Muir Station responded to a report on Olivia Lane.

While deputies were en route, dispatchers reported that shots had been fired.

Several people injured during the incident flagged down deputies on their way to the scene.

When deputies arrived, they found one person unresponsive. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Authorities have not released the victim's identity pending notification of next of kin.

A second person was transported to a hospital for treatment. Officials did not immediately release details about that person's condition.

Investigators identified the suspect as 35-year-old Avery Alexander Gibbs, who police described as a transient.

Detectives warned that Gibbs should not be approached. Anyone who sees him is urged to call 911 immediately.
