Downtown Danville Is Going To The Dogs For A Good Cause

DANVILLE, CA — Who let the dogs out? Downtown Danville did on Thursday, Aug. 13 for Joybound Around Town, a pet-friendly evening stroll around town sponsored by Joybound, a Walnut Creek-based animal welfare nonprofit.

From 6 to 8 p.m., gather around Prospect Park to meet with local dogs, enjoy live music, and learn more about the work and mission of Joybound. Participating shops and restaurants nearby will contribute a part of the proceeds to Joybound, whose official mission is to “inspire and nurture the human-animal bond and bring people and animals together to enrich each other’s lives.”

The organization rescues dogs and cats, particularly from overcrowded municipal shelters, provides them with medical and behavioral care, and places them in homes. Guided by the philosophy that “the best home for a pet is the one that they’re already in,” Joybound aims to keep low-income pet owners from surrendering their pets by providing them with free pet food, low-cost veterinary care, vaccinations, microchips, and spaying and neutering services. Joybound also trains shelter dogs as psychiatric service dogs and emotional-support animals, and sends therapy-animal teams to hospitals, schools, and nursing homes. They also offer a cat lounge, thrift store, youth programs, a grooming salon, training classes, and more.

Joybound Around Town is the latest in a series of dog-friendly events in Danville. The town launched a yearlong “Dog Friendly Danville” campaign identifying downtown businesses that welcome dogs. In March, Molly's Pup-Purr-ee pet store sponsored a doggie stroll celebrating its 30th anniversary. Each Halloween, the town hosts a Howl-o-Ween dog costume contest and pet parade.
