Teen Struck By Car in Foster City

The 17-year-old girl was hit by a car while crossing Port Royal early Friday morning.

A 17-year-old Foster City girl was seriously injured after being struck by a car Friday morning, according to the Foster City Police Department.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Edgewater Boulevard and Port Royal in Foster CityΒ at about 6:50 a.m., police said.

According to the initial investigation, the girlΒ was crossing Port Royal when she was struck by a 2014 BMW 528i traveling northΒ on Edgewater Boulevard.Β 

Upon arrival, emergency personnel found the pedestrian on the roadway badly injured andΒ immediately began treatment.

The girl was transported to Stanford Medical Center where she wasΒ undergoing treatment as of early Friday afternoon.

The driver remained at the collision scene and has beenΒ cooperating with investigating officers, police said.

The names of the pedestrian and driver are not beingΒ released by policeΒ at this time.

"This tragic incident punctuates the need for drivers to always be aware of pedestrians in andΒ around roadways and be prepared to yield for them," Foster City Police Chief Matthew Martel said in a statement.

"Pedestrians can be very hard to see, especially in badΒ weather or during times of darkness. Drivers should not overtake and pass other vehicles that haveΒ stopped for pedestrians," he said.

Additionally, pedestrians should always exercise due caution when crossing theΒ street, according to police.

Pedestrians are reminded to only cross at corners or in designated crosswalks while also adheringΒ to traffic control devices. It is always a good idea for pedestrians to try and make eye contact with a driverΒ before crossing in front of them.
