'The Odyssey' Makes Box Office History At TCL Chinese Theatre In Hollywood

LOS ANGELES, CA — Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" has generated more than $4.1 million in ticket sales at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, making the venue the highest-grossing theater for a single film in history, it was announced Monday.

The milestone was reached Sunday, 37 days after the Universal Pictures and Syncopy film opened in theaters, according to representatives for the TCL Chinese Theatre.

"The TCL Chinese Theatre has been at the center of Hollywood's moviegoing history for nearly a century, making this an extraordinary milestone for both the theatre and `The Odyssey,"' Jim Orr, Universal Pictures' president of domestic distribution, said. "It's a tremendous achievement for Chris, Emma and the entire Syncopy team, and a real testament to the singular cinematic experience they've created."

"The Odyssey," Nolan's adaptation of Homer's ancient Greek epic, opened July 17 and was the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, along with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

The movie has also become the highest-grossing film of Nolan's career and the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide.

"Thanks to our incredible partners at Universal and IMAX, and of course to Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas for bringing us a film that embodies everything that is great about going to the movies," Brett Fellman, president of film and marketing for TCL Chinese Theatres, said.

Nolan wrote and directed the film and produced it with Thomas through their Syncopy production company. The movie was filmed using newly developed IMAX technology and was shot in locations around the world.

"The Odyssey" will continue its IMAX 70mm run at the TCL Chinese Theatre through Sept. 16, according to theater representatives.
