Dangerous Surf Pounds OC Beaches; Extreme Heat To Hit Region Through Weekend

LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Draw the shades, Orange County. Extreme heat is projected to hit the region through the weekend, as well as big waves and flood advisories for the county's coastal areas.

The Extreme Heat Advisory was issued for Orange County inland areas, including: Irvine, Orange, Mission Viejo, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, Fullerton and Anaheim.

The advisory was issued for "dangerously hot conditions" with high temperatures in the lower to mid-90s east of the Golden State (5) Freeway expected.

Coastal Orange County residents in higher terrain can expect temperatures in the mid-80s, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the weather service, the advisory will remain in effect from 10 a.m. Friday to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Residents were urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned areas and stay out of the sun.

In addition, a flood and surf advisory was issued for coastal Orange County.

Residents can expect high surf, with large breaking waves of up to nine waves on south and southwest-facing beaches.

West-facing beaches will likely experience three to six foot waves, according to the service.

Residents may experience a flooding of low-lying beach parking lots, boardwalks and roads, as well as dangerous swimming and surfing conditions.

"A five foot swell associated with Hurricane Genevieve with a period around 14 seconds peaks today," the weather service said in a statement.

According to the weather service, the strongest waves will crash Thursday and Friday and begin to subside by Saturday into Sunday.
