Celebrate National Poetry Month: Poetry for the Ages - Local Poets Featured

This year’s Spring Concert welcomes two top performers to lead a band in wide variety of favorite songs. Mads Tolling (<a href="https://madstolling.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://madstolling.com/</a>) returns to the stage to bring his usual spectacular flare to the violin in performances of rock to classical. Brian Nova (<a href="https://www.briannova.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.briannova.com/</a>), one of the greatest jazz guitarists performing today, has performed with everyone from Oscar Peterson to Steve Miller (Steve Miller Band). They will be joined by other top musicians from our area to present a one-hour concert of high-energy, captivating selections. All are welcome!
This is a free community event, however we request that you RSVP for entrance and there is a suggested donation per ticket of $30. All net proceeds will benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano.

CLARINET FUSION, the Bay Area’s premiere Clarinet Choir, brings their resonating sound to an upcoming concert titled ‘In the Spotlight’
 at 7PM on Friday, April 24 at the Martinez Community Senior Center. 
Join us for an exciting mix of tunes that includes popular, fun!, 
classical, a little bit of jazz, and features the individual instruments
 and musicians.
Clarinet
 Fusion, a recipient of the Contra Costa County Arts Recognition Award, 
is based in Pleasant Hill and is in its 17th year entertaining audiences
 around the Bay Area and beyond. With
 its wonderful blend of 9 musicians playing 5 different kinds of 
clarinets – from the smallest high-pitched Eb clarinet at 19 inches to 
the largest Contrabass clarinet at 9 feet, Fusion brings its varied 
musical programing for the enjoyment of all. Come learn about clarinets,
 hear some great music and the emcee will share some fun facts about the
 songs along the way. The musicians will be available to talk with you 
and answer questions after the concert.

The concert is open to the public – all ages welcome!&nbsp;Doors open at 6:30pm.
Tickets are $5 per person and available at the door.

The Saint Mary's College Theatre Program is proud to announce our upcoming production of the Tony Award-winning musical&nbsp;PIPPIN, with music and lyrics by Broadway luminary Stephen Schwartz, the composer of&nbsp;WICKED, and a book by Roger O. Hirson and Bob Fosse.&nbsp;Our version of&nbsp;PIPPIN&nbsp;will use a contemporary “ripped from the headlines” story to explore themes of family dynasty and succession, presenting the messy family dynamics of a media mogul who is known for pitting sibling against sibling, succumbing to the machinations of a manipulative spouse, and whose resistance to passing on his legacy ultimately divides the family.

Music Director Lawrence Kohl presents pianist Jon Nakamatsu in his debut Pacific Chamber Orchestra (PCO) performance on Saturday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church (LOPC) and Sunday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore. 
Nakamatsu is a Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Gold Medalist and a Bay Area favorite. A frequent solo recitalist at the Bankhead, he joins PCO for American composer Edward MacDowell’s buoyant Second Piano Concerto. The program culminates in the gorgeous melodies and triumphant sweep of Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony.
 “MacDowell’s music is optimistic, expansive and heartfelt and distinctly American,” says Nakamatsu. “I’m excited to bring his buoyant Second Piano Concerto to my home audiences with PCO.” Van Cliburn chose this music for his debut performance when he was eighteen years old.
MacDowell was among the first American composers to achieve international recognition within the European classical tradition. Admired by Franz Liszt and celebrated in both Europe and the United States, he helped establish an American Romantic voice on the world stage. His Second Piano Concerto is lyrical, spirited and richly melodic, a work that balances virtuosity with warmth.
Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony is often portrayed as a heroic arc, beginning with the iconic “fate knocking at the door” and culminating in triumph. Tchaikovsky transforms that fate idea into a deeply personal declaration of identity, voiced through tender yearning, surging intensity and resolute strength. The result is a captivating symphony of sweeping melody and exhilarating power.
Kohl frames the program this way, “MacDowell and Tchaikovsky offer two distinctly life affirming works. One is spirited and lyrical, the other soulful and blazing. Both are exhilarating.” Together, the concerto and symphony create an afternoon of Romantic sweep, radiant melody and emotional affirmation.
