Woman Killed While Lying In Downtown Long Beach Street

LONG BEACH, CA — A woman was killed after she was struck by a vehicle while lying in a downtown Long Beach street late Monday night, authorities said.

The woman was lying in the roadway near Pacific Avenue and Sixth Street at about 10:52 p.m. when she was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling northbound on Pacific Avenue, according to a Long Beach Police Department statement released Tuesday.

Officers found the woman in the roadway with injuries to her upper body. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and determined she had died, police said. Investigators said the woman was lying in the roadway "for unknown reasons."

The Tahoe was driven by a 25-year-old Long Beach resident, who immediately stopped and called 911, according to police. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Neither speed, impaired driving nor distracted driving appears to have contributed to the collision, police said. The woman's identity was being withheld pending notification of her next of kin by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

The death marked Long Beach's 35th fatal traffic collision of 2026, according to the Long Beach Post. The city recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions in 2025, its highest annual total in more than a decade. Last year's toll included 32 pedestrians, bicyclists and e-scooter riders, according to previous Long Beach Post reporting.

The latest death came just over a week after a separate fatal pedestrian collision on Pacific Avenue. In that case, 65-year-old Juvenal Banderas was struck by three vehicles on Sept. 13 north of Pacific Coast Highway. Two of the vehicles left the scene, while the driver of a third remained and cooperated with investigators, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
