Director John Schlesinger’s film version of James Leo Herlihy’s novel about two unlikely friends—a would-be gigolo and a petty hustler—in the seedier side of 1960s Manhattan was a breakthrough in American cinema’s treatment of previously taboo subject matter.
Best Actor nominations were earned by Dustin Hoffman as the ailing “Ratso” Rizzo and Jon Voight in a star-making turn as Joe Buck, with supporting actress nominee Sylvia Miles among the impressive cast assembled by Schlesinger and pioneering, uncredited casting director Marion Dougherty. The film earned Oscars for Best Picture (Jerome Hellman, producer), Schlesinger’s direction, and Waldo Salt’s screenplay.
