Popular Retailer Plans Surprise Comeback After Suddenly Closing All 75 CA Stores

The retailer has bounced back after closing all of its stores nationwide over a year ago.

Party City is making a comeback.

The once ubiquitous retailer closed all of its stores in December 2024, ending its 40-year reign as the go-to party supplier in the country. The company had been on the verge of collapse following continued financial struggles after exiting bankruptcy.

This week, company leaders announced Party City has risen from the dead — Party City is opening up locations inside existing Staples stores, giving shoppers a stock up on party supplies in the same place they buy office essentials.

The partnership means that there are already 700 Staples locations nationwide with Party City stores inside and even more stores are expected to be added by the end of this year.

“By bringing Party City into Staples stores, we’re expanding what customers can accomplish in one place — combining helium balloons and party supplies with our print and marketing services to offer a complete solution for celebrations, from graduations to grand openings and everything in between," Marshall Warkentin, staples president of U.S. retail said in a statement.

While the shops will not be as comprehensive as the old Party Cities, they'll still feature plenty of party decor, balloons, tableware, gift bags, costume accessories, and more.

"Staples stood out immediately, not only for its national footprint, but for its strong connection to the communities we have both been part of for years," said Joel Weinshanker, the CEO of holding company Ad Populum, which now owns the Party City brand.

"It felt like a natural fit from the start," he added.

The companies are celebrating the launch with a number of promotions, including $5 off party supply purchases of $25 or more. More info is available on Staples' website.
