County CIO Retires After Leading Digital Transformation In Marin

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Marin County has launched a national search for a new chief information officer after the longtime head of its technology department retired following eight years overseeing the county's digital modernization efforts.

Liza Massey retired July 31 after overseeing the Department of Information Services and Technology since 2018.

During her tenure, the department expanded online government services, strengthened cybersecurity, improved digital accessibility and helped increase internet connectivity in underserved parts of Marin County.

"The entire county benefitted in many ways from Liza's leadership, especially through the COVID-19 pandemic and the emergency the County faced with launching so many online services all at once," said Derek Johnson, Marin County executive. "IST stepped up under pressure in a big way."

Earlier this month, the department received a National Association of Counties award recognizing it as the nation's top digital county among counties with populations between 250,000 and 499,999 — the second time it earned the honor under Massey's leadership.

"As I retire after 39 years in government IT, I leave with gratitude rather than goodbyes," Massey said. "The most meaningful part of my career has been the people, especially my exceptional IST team, our County partners, and the communities we serve."

Assistant Information Services and Technology Director Angie Goldman has been appointed interim chief information officer while the county conducts a national search.

County officials expect to name a permanent replacement by early October.
