Napa Jury Acquits Man In Teen’s Fentanyl Death

NAPA VALLEY, CA — A Napa County Superior Court jury has acquitted a 25-year-old Santa Rosa man of murder charges in the fentanyl-related death of a Napa teenager four years ago, prosecutors said Thursday.

Alan Jazeel Martinez was found not guilty of murder and the lesser offense of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 17-year-old Monica Flores, according to the Napa County District Attorney's Office.

Martinez was accused of selling a fentanyl-laced pill to Flores two times in May 2022. Flores was found dead in the bedroom of her Napa home by family members on May 25, 2022, prosecutors said.

The jury's verdict came after a three and a half week trial. Although acquitted of the more serious charges, Martinez was found guilty of two counts of felony selling fentanyl to a minor, two counts of felony possession of fentanyl for sale, and two counts of felony transportation of fentanyl for sale.

"Monica's family came to court seeking accountability for the loss of their daughter and loved one, and we know that no verdict can give them back what they have lost," Deputy District Attorney Katie Gross said in a statement. "Although we are disappointed that the jury did not find Martinez guilty of murder, we are grateful for the jury's careful consideration of this case and respect its decision."

Martinez is set to be sentenced on Sept. 28 in Napa County Superior Court.
