Famed Valley Mexican Restaurant To Mark 65th Anniversary With $6.50 Food, Drink Specials

BURBANK (CNS) - Barragan's Mexican Restaurant will celebrate its 65th anniversary next month with $6.50 food and drink specials at its Burbank location, it was announced Friday.

The anniversary specials will be offered from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and each Thursday in September at the restaurant, 730 N. Victory Blvd. A roving Mexican trio will perform from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on those days.

Ramon and Grace Barragan founded the restaurant in 1961 as a small coffee shop along Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. As the business grew, the couple acquired neighboring storefronts to expand the restaurant, according to the family.

The couple's six children -- Frank, Tony, Armando, Grace, Carmen and Rita -- grew up around the restaurant and became involved in the family business.

A Glendale location opened in 1981, followed by the Burbank restaurant in September 1985. The Echo Park and Glendale locations later closed, leaving Burbank as the restaurant's remaining location.

The family said the restaurant continues to serve dishes based on Ramon Barragan's original recipes, including cocido and hard-shell tacos, and some employees have worked for the business since its Echo Park and Glendale years.

Ramon's son, Armando Barragan, took over ownership in 2000. His sons, Armando Jr. and Michael, are also involved in continuing the family business.

Ramon Barragan died in April 2025.

The anniversary specials and musical performances are planned for Sept. 3, 10, 17 and 24.
