Suspect in RivCo Stabbing Dies After Being Shot By Police

The victim has been released from the hospital, police said.

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA — A 55-year-old man shot by police Monday night after he stabbed someone inside a home in Cathedral City has died, police said.

Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon just after 7 p.m. on Via Minorca in the Date Palm Country Club. The caller told 911 that the suspect, who they knew, stabbed someone in the residence after forcing his way inside, according to the Cathedral City Police Department.

When police arrived, they made contact with the suspect outside of the residence while he was armed with a weapon and shot him shortly after, police said.

It was unclear what led up to the shooting.

Police said the victim and the suspect were transported to a local hospital.

The suspect, who has not been identified, died at the hospital, police said.

The victim has been released from the hospital after suffering an injury to their upper torso.

No officers were injured during the incident.

Riverside County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene to investigate the officer-involved shooting. CCPD's Professional Standards Bureau will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether any policy violations occurred.

The officer, who has not been identified, is a 13-year veteran of law enforcement. He will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigations, according to CCPD.
