AI Scientist's Sudden Death Leads To Demand For Answers In Bay Area

PALO ALTO, CA — The family of a 32-year-old artificial intelligence data scientist and researcher who mysteriously died in Palo Alto is calling for the truth to come to light.

Irfan Al-Hussaini was found unconscious on the morning of July 22 in his Palo Alto apartment and died on July 30 after being on life support, according to a Change.org petition calling for further investigation that was started by his family.

The petition has since gained more than 15,000 signatures.

“Nothing about his death is natural or normal. The circumstances raise serious and deeply troubling questions. His family, friends, and community deserve transparency, a thorough investigation, and a clear account of what happened,” the petition states.

The Santa Clara Medical Examiner’s office ruled Al-Hussaini’s death as a suicide, but his family stated that does not make sense in the context of the events surrounding his death.

Al-Hussaini worked for Nvidia in Santa Clara. According to the petition, when his colleagues visited him on life support in the hospital, they said he had ended a work presentation around 9 a.m. the morning he was found unconscious. His colleagues recalled that he then sent a message to the team group chat at 10:02 a.m. stating, “‘Athi’ is not feeling well and he would take the rest of the day off. His colleagues mentioned they had no prior idea who ‘Athi ’ was.”

Police received a 911 call to Al-Hussaini’s address around 10:22 a.m., according to the petition.

“The doctors reported that he suffered from irreversible brain damage due to lack of supply to his brain for half an hour to an hour. Irfan’s colleagues' statements, the timeline of the 911 call, and what the doctor reported raises serious questions about what conspired that morning,” the Change.org petition reads.

Al-Hussaini’s family and their attorney gathered outside Palo Alto City Hall on Thursday to bring attention to the case and to seek an independent medical examiner to review the case.

“This is a family in agony, and they deserve answers. Right now, no one is taking responsibility. Not the police, not the Medical Examiner,” Tony Brass, the family’s attorney, told KRON4. “Irfan died under serious, unresolved circumstances, and this family won’t stop asking the questions until someone finally conducts a full investigation as the law requires.”

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office did not respond to requests for comment.
