Truck Catches Fire On I-680, Lanes Closed

SUNOL, CA — A semi-trailer truck caught fire on southbound I-680 near Vargas Road south of Sunol Monday morning, causing lane closures and major delays.

Both the cab and trailer of a Target tractor-trailer were reported to be on fire at 4:34 a.m. Monday, according to a California Highway Patrol log. Callers reported that no one was inside the vehicle, and the fire had spread to a hillside just north of Vargas Road. No active fires were reported in the area as of 9:44 a.m.

CHP arrived on the scene at 4:54 a.m., and noted that the fire was blocking the slow lane. They also reported that all of the truck’s rear tires had burned off. A photo from Instagram posted by CHP shows the front of the trailer completely gutted, with burned items from the truck spilling out onto the road.

CHP requested a tow truck for the roughly 53-foot rig, which was estimated to weigh 40,000 to 50,000 pounds loaded.

Lanes 4 and 5 were closed at 6:13 a.m., with no estimated reopening time. At 8:39 a.m., CHP said that delays will continue because crews have to offload before the truck and trailer can be removed. 511.org notes that the right lane of I-680 southbound remains blocked as of 9:31 a.m.

No injuries were mentioned in the CHP report.
