Grocery Store Stabbing Suspect Detained After Attempted Murder In SMC: Police

Police said the suspect appeared to have started stabbing the victim unprovoked.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — A 31-year-old man is in custody after a violent confrontation at a local Safeway grocery store on Saturday night left one person injured and sent shoppers scrambling for safety as a firearm was discharged during the struggle, police said.

The Redwood City Police Department responded to numerous 911 calls at approximately 10:59 p.m. on Saturday, reporting a stabbing and possible shooting at the Safeway located at 1071 El Camino Real. Upon arrival, officers said they were directed to the suspect by witnesses and detained him without incident.

Police said a man and woman were in the store's self-checkout area when they were approached by a man, later identified as Isidro Zamora-Cisneros. Police said Zamora-Cisneros began assaulting the man with a knife without any apparent provocation.

In a desperate attempt to protect the man being stabbed, the woman used a shopping cart to fend off the attacker. During the struggle, the male victim pulled out a gun and fired a single shot. The round struck a computer monitor inside the store, and police confirmed that no one was injured by the gunfire.

The suspect fled the building into the parking lot after the shot was fired, where he was quickly apprehended by responding officers. The victim suffered a stab wound to the abdomen and several superficial wounds. He received medical treatment on-site from Redwood City Fire Department personnel.

Zamora-Cisneros, a Redwood City resident, was booked into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility. He faces several serious charges, including attempted murder, possession of methamphetamine, being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of narcotic paraphernalia, police said.

Investigators are still working to determine if the victims and the suspect had any prior relationship.

However, police believe Zamora-Cisneros acted alone and have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
