Shooting Shuts Down SMART Station

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office lifted a warning to avoid a local SMART station at 10:55 a.m.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — The report of gunfire at a SMART station platform shut down service late Tuesday morning.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers received a 911 call at about 10:40 a.m. The caller reported shots fired from the SMART train platform on Airport Boulevard in Larkfield.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office issued an alert at 10:55 a.m. to avoid the area of the Smart Train Station at 3748 Regional Parkway in Santa Rosa.

Sonoma County CAL FIRE reported a possible shooter in the northern area of Santa Rosa.

Using a drone and the Henry-1 helicopter, deputies searched the area for the suspect and verified he was not carrying a weapon. Police took him into custody without incident.

A search found the 17-year-old suspect, a Sonoma County resident on active probation from another Bay Area county, carrying an "airsoft Glock-style replica handgun" concealed in his waistband, according to police. Authorities did not release his name because he is a minor.

Investigators booked the juvenile into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of illegal discharge of a small arms device and disrupting train operations.

The sheriff’s office credited assisting agencies including the California Highway Patrol, Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, and Sonoma County Fire District for helping bring the situation under control.

The Santa Rosa SMART station reopened at 11:20 a.m.
