23 Chihuahuas Rescued After Owner Evicted From Imperial Beach Home

SAN DIEGO, CA — San Diego Humane Society rescued 23 adult Chihuahuas Tuesday after their owner was evicted from their home in Imperial Beach, adding to an already strained shelter capacity.

Many of the dogs have hair loss and missing teeth, while some are fearful and will require specialized care, according to San Diego Humane Society. The dogs received vaccines and baths after arriving at the organization's San Diego campus.

The Chihuahuas are not yet available for adoption. Each will undergo medical and behavioral evaluations before being placed for adoption.

The intake came as the Humane Society reported its canine shelters were at 171% capacity. The organization took in 103 animals Tuesday alone.

The Humane Society urged people who are able to adopt or foster dogs to help create space for animals coming into its shelters.

Adoption fees are 50% off for all animals except horses throughout August as part of Clear the Shelters month. Adoption fees will be waived Saturday for Clear the Shelters Day.

People who cannot adopt can also help by fostering a dog, particularly a large dog. The Humane Society provides foster families with food, supplies, resources and medical care.

The Chihuahuas will be posted for adoption at sdhumane.org/adopt once they are ready.
