SeaWorld San Diego Celebrates Opening Of All-New Shark Encounter Exhibit

SAN DIEGO, CA — SeaWorld San Diego officially opened its all-new Shark Encounter exhibit Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring park leaders and shark mascots.

The grand opening included remarks from SeaWorld San Diego President Tyler Carter and Curator of Fish Danielle Castillo before the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Guests attending the event received first access to the reimagined attraction, which is designed to educate visitors about sharks and marine conservation through immersive habitats and interactive experiences.

Shark Encounter showcases 11 shark species, including sand tiger sharks, blacktip reef sharks and the endangered Australian leopard shark. Features include above-water viewing areas, an underwater tunnel with a moving walkway, and a floor-to-ceiling glass viewing wall with multimedia displays.

"The all-new Shark Encounter is an awe-inspiring experience that brings guests face-to-face with some of the ocean's most powerful and misunderstood predators," Carter said in an earlier statement. "From above-water viewing to the immersive shark tunnel, this dynamic habitat offers a deeper appreciation for these incredible animals while reinforcing our commitment to marine education, conservation, and inspiring the next generation of ocean advocates."

Following the ceremony, visitors explored the new exhibit, posed for themed photos and sampled chocolate milk provided by Hollandia Dairy.

SeaWorld officials said the attraction aims to challenge misconceptions about sharks while highlighting the role they play in marine ecosystems.

The opening comes after the park recently received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, recognizing its animal care programs.
