Bay Area HS Baseball Team Ordered To Forfeit 3 Games After Racism Investigation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A San Francisco high school varsity team will forfeit three games this season after an investigation determined they were "unsportmanslike" when they allegedly made a racist taunt while watching another game in May.

The Lowell High School varsity team will forfeit games against Lincoln High School, Galileo Academy and Washington High School, according to the investigation.

"Dates of these athletic contests are still being determined," CIF officials said. "The forfeited games were chosen based on the standings last season and the impact it will have on standings in the 2026-2027 season."

Lowell's junior varsity and varsity teams will also need to complete National Federation of State High School Associations courses on implicit bias, bullying, hazing and inappropriate behaviors, according to the investigation.

The investigation by the Academic Athletic Association and CIF San Francisco City Section doesn't mention what the taunt was, but said it happened while the Lowell Varsity baseball team was watching its junior varsity team play in the championship game against Lincoln High School.

The varsity team played in the championship game days later and won, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Days later, the team's entire coaching staff was placed on indefinite leave while the school district investigated the taunts, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"We want to emphasize that there is no place for racism, discrimination, or racialized harm in the Lowell community or anywhere in SFUSD," the district said to SFGate.
