SigAlert On I-80 Macarthur Maze Blocking All Lanes

BAY AREA, CA — A box truck crash and fuel spill have shut down the Tuesday morning commute through Oakland’s MacArthur Maze, causing westbound Interstate 80 traffic to back up to El Cerrito.

The crash damaged infrastructure on the roadway and spilled fuel near wetlands and has tied up traffic during the already busy morning commute, according to reports.

The California Highway Patrol reported the crash about 2:40 a.m. on the westbound I-80 connection to interstates 580 and 880.

CHP identified the vehicles as a white box truck and a black Tesla sedan. The collision heavily damaged the truck, including its wheels, and caused what authorities described as gas or oil to leak into a storm drain.

CHP halted traffic across all lanes before allowing vehicles through one lane.

The crash prompted CHP to issue a SigAlert for the westbound I-80 transition to I-580 and I-880. The collision shut the second and third lanes, leaving one lane available to traffic. CHP has not said when roadways would be fully reopened.

By about 7 a.m., crews were still working at the scene, the two right lanes remained unavailable, and the resulting traffic jam extended to El Cerrito.

Motorists should plan for delays and use alternate routes, including Highway 24, I-580, local roads, or BART.
