Here are some great events taking place in San Juan Capistrano this weekend:

1. FIRST FRIDAY-THE GHOST WRITER (click for event listing)

Where/When: 7 p.m. Friday, , 31495 El Camino Real. 

Why go: There's Regency San Juan Capistrano Theatre, and there's the library—yes, it plays movies, too (even before the Regency came to town). This week's movie is about a ghost writer who puts his life in jeopardy when he uncovers secrets about a former British prime minister.

2. BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO (click for event listing)

Where/When: 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, , 31776 El Camino Real.

Why go: We gave this Neil Sedaka musical earlier in the week. Audience members serve as backup singers to the oldies songs, and it's one of the few Playhouse productions that include a live band.

Pricing: $24-40

3. CARe SHOW AND DR. JOE CORTESE MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE POKER RUN (click for event listing)

Where/When: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, San Juan Capistrano Sports Center, 25925 Camino del Avion.

Why go: This is the first year that two of San Juan Capistrano's most popular nonprofits are partnering up to hold their annual fundraisers. You'll have the chance to see not only hundreds of restored classic cars, but also shiny hogs as they roll in from the Orange County Harley-Davidson in Irvine. There will also be live entertainment, vendors and exhibits.

Pricing: Admission is free for kids younger than 10; $5 for adults and $2 for children ages 11 to 17.

4. BACKYARD SKILLS: WATER PURIFICATION AND SAND FILTRATION (click for event listing)

Where/When: 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the Ecology Center, 32701 Alipaz St.

Why go: This event is part of a monthly series of DIY workshops aimed at equipping locals with the skills they need to conserve water at home.

Pricing: $25 plus materials for nonmembers and $22.50 plus materials for members

5. AN EVENING OF CULTURE AND COMMUNITY/UNA NOCHE DE CULTURA Y COMUNIDAD (click for event listing)

Where/When: 7 p.m. Saturday, , 26351 Junipero Serra Rd.

Why go: The high school has teamed up with Ricardo’s Place, the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce, Stephanie Frisch Insurance-101 and the CREER board of directors to present this showcase of local artists, including members of the Ballet Nacional de México and Corazones Alegres de CREER.

Pricing: $5 in advance; $10 at the door

6. SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION DAY (click for event listing)

Where/When: noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, , 29211 Vista Montana.

Why go: Slip on your old tennis shoes, put on a hat, slather on the sunscreen and grab your gloves, shovels, hand trowels, brooms and rakes. Students who participate will receive community service hours, and student athletes will earn Stallion booster points. Additionally, every student who volunteers will receive free entrance to the 7 p.m. home basketball game versus San Clemente.

7. OC CAN YOU PLAY?(click for event listing)

Why go: It's the final weekend that the will be placed outside the Starbucks across from Mission San Juan Capistrano.
