'Dangerous' Homemade Weapons Found During East Bay Pistol-Whipping Investigation: PD

OAKLAND, CA — An investigation into a pistol-whipping last month in Oakland led officers to a "dangerous" homemade weapons cache and the arrest of a suspect, police said.

Police say the investigation started when they learned about a person who was pistol-whipped in the 1100 block of 70th Avenue on June 8.

The victim helped investigators identify the suspect, who had driven off from the scene in a white car before officers arrived, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Officers secured a warrant for the suspect's arrest, and six weeks after the assault, located him and his car, police said.

During the arrest and a search of a home where the suspect was staying, officers found several homemade weapons designed to fire bullets and projectiles, suspected drugs and ammo, police said.

"OPD is seeing a rise in the number of dangerous homemade weapons within the community," authorities said in a statement Wednesday. "These improvised weapons pose a significant risk to the public and the individuals who possess or use them."

The case remains under investigation, police said. The OPD asked that anyone with more information on the case contact the agency at 510-238-3426.
