Man Dies After Assault In SMC, Suspect Faces Manslaughter Charge: Police

EAST PALO ALTO, CA — A 53-year-old East Palo Alto man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after a man he is accused of assaulting died from his injuries, police said.

Angel Lopez Ibarra Jr. was booked Tuesday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury and causing great bodily injury during a felony, according to the East Palo Alto Police Department.

The victim was identified as 52-year-old Andres Alberto Henriquez Gomez of Menlo Park.

Police said officers responded Thursday to the 2300 block of University Avenue after reports of a man acting erratically and disrobing in public. Officers found Henriquez Gomez suffering from significant facial injuries, and he reported that he had been assaulted.

Officers detained Ibarra, who was initially booked into the San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of assault causing great bodily injury and a parole violation, police said.

Later that afternoon, Stanford Hospital notified police that Henriquez Gomez had died from his injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police have not released additional details about what led to the assault.

Henriquez Gomez’s daughter, Brizeida Henriquez, has created a GoFundMe to help the family following his death.

“[My father's] unexpected passing has left our family devastated and facing incredibly difficult times and expenses,” the fundraiser says.
