Police To Hold DUI Checkpoint In San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL, CA — The San Rafael Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint later this month as part of an ongoing effort to remove impaired drivers from local roads.

The checkpoint is scheduled for Aug. 28 from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at an undisclosed location in San Rafael.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data identifying areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," said Corporal Justin Schraeder. "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety."

Officials reminded drivers that impairment isn't limited to alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can affect a person's ability to drive, and driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal despite its legal status in California.

According to the department, a first-time DUI conviction can result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver's license.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with funding provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
