Police Stress No ICE Involvement In Recent San Rafael Arrest

SAN RAFAEL, CA — A loud blast heard during a police operation in San Rafael on Thursday came from a diversionary device used by San Francisco officers while taking a wanted suspect into custody, authorities said.

San Francisco police served a search warrant around 12:45 p.m. on the 200 block of Canal Street as part of a criminal investigation, according to the San Rafael Police Department.

During the operation, officers used a diversionary device that produces a loud noise to briefly distract the suspect as officers moved in to make the arrest, police said.

San Rafael police assisted San Francisco officers by providing Spanish-language interpretation and deploying a drone for overhead security.

Local police also emphasized that the operation had no connection to immigration enforcement.

No federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, participated in the operation, police said.

San Rafael police said the department does not assist or cooperate with ICE on immigration enforcement.

San Francisco police led the investigation and operation. Additional information about the suspect, the investigation and the circumstances surrounding the arrest was not immediately released.
