Rare Famous Car Destroyed In San Rafael Garage Fire: FD
Fire officials said the rare collector car caught fire while it was running, but crews stopped the blaze before it spread into the home.
SAN RAFAEL, CA — A rare DeLorean made famous by the "Back to the Future" films was destroyed Sunday after it caught fire inside a San Rafael garage, according to the San Rafael Fire Department.
The fire was reported around 4:38 p.m. in the 100 block of Marino Drive.
Crews brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes, preventing it from spreading into the home.

Firefighters said the owner had started the 1984 DMC DeLorean when he noticed fumes and realized the engine compartment was on fire, according to a report by Bay City News.

In a press release, the fire department used the incident to remind homeowners about the importance of fire-resistant barriers between attached garages and living spaces, which can help slow the spread of fire and smoke into a home.
The DeLorean is best known as the time machine in the "Back to the Future" films. The stainless-steel sports car, recognizable by its gull-wing doors, was produced in the early 1980s, with fewer than 7,000 sold to customers before the company ceased operations.
