Man Drives Off 500 Foot Cliff On Highway 1 In Santa Cruz County: Police

The cause of the crash remains under investigation; authorities said it is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A 58-year-old Santa Rosa man died Sunday afternoon after his car veered off Highway 1 and plunged over a cliff, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported around 12:48 p.m. The man was driving a black 2017 Honda Pilot southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle drifted off the west edge of the roadway north of Scott Creek, struck a call box, traveled through vegetation in a southwesterly direction and went over the cliff.

Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to have been the sole occupant of the vehicle.
