DUI Checkpoint, Extra Police Planned In Santa Monica For Labor Day Weekend

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica police will operate a DUI checkpoint Friday night as the department prepares for increased crowds and traffic across the city over Labor Day weekend.

The Santa Monica Police Department will conduct the checkpoint from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location, according to a department announcement.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected using data showing where impaired-driving crashes have occurred.

The operation comes as Santa Monica prepares for what police expect will be a busy holiday weekend. In a separate Labor Day safety announcement, SMPD said the holiday traditionally brings increased activity to the beach, Santa Monica Pier, Downtown, parks, residential neighborhoods and other popular destinations.

Extra Police Presence Over Holiday Weekend

Residents and visitors should expect to see SMPD personnel throughout Santa Monica over Labor Day weekend, police said. Officers will provide a visible public safety presence, assist with traffic control and help manage the increased activity expected around the city.

Police warned motorists to anticipate heavier vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic and urged drivers to slow down, remain alert and allow additional time to reach their destinations.

SMPD also encouraged people celebrating over the holiday weekend to plan a safe ride if they intend to drink by designating a sober driver, taking public transportation or using a rideshare or taxi.

With larger crowds expected at popular destinations, police urged visitors to secure their vehicles and avoid leaving bags, electronics and other valuables visible inside. People visiting busy public areas were also advised to keep phones, wallets, purses and other belongings secure.

DUI Checkpoint Planned Friday Night

SMPD said the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road. Police also reminded drivers that impairment does not necessarily involve alcohol. Some prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with a person's ability to drive safely.

Although medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving while under the influence of marijuana remains illegal. Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as a suspended driver's license, according to SMPD.
