Thousands Lose Power As Powerful Nor'easter Storm Bears Down On CT: Latest Updates

The nor'eater storm that has dominated the news cycle this week in Connecticut is finally here, and its impacts continue to appear significant for us.

Thousands of residents are waking up without power across Connecticut as strong wind gusts and bands of heavy rain are falling.

Thunderstorms are also possible during Saturday, and flooding remains a concern too.

Here are the latest specifics on the storm via WFSB 3 TV meteorologists:

"We’re expecting wind gusts to reach 40-50 mph and since our trees are still fully leafed, limbs/branches could come down leading to scattered power outages. Gusts to 55 mph will be possible along the shoreline. Also, it will be raw with temps running nearly 10° below normal. When it comes to rain, 2-5” likely adds up across the state (perhaps locally higher amounts). Even if heavier, the rain comes over a 48 hour window of time, so the threat for flooding is low. Something else we’ll be monitoring: the potential for ‘coastal’ flooding thanks to astronomically high tides (we have the full ‘harvest’ moon this weekend).

"....Given the duration of the storm, we’re now expecting moderate coastal flooding during the high tide cycles... 2-3′ of inundation is expected along the shoreline in New Haven and Fairfield counties, while SE CT will see 1-2′ of inundation. As the storm track has shifted westward a bit, some of the greater impacts will be felt here in Connecticut. (Read more at WFSB 3 TV).

Southern Connecticut details via the National Weather Service

A wind advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday as gusts could reach 55 mph.

A coastal flood warning is in effect for coastal sections of Fairfield and New Haven counties until 6 p.m. Sunday.

"Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront. Numerous road closures are likely, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays."

A coastal flood advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for coastal sections of Middlesex and New London counties.

"Minor flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding," according to the National Weather Service.

Northern Connecticut details via the National Weather Service

A wind advisory is in effect until 8 a.m. Sunday. Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

Power outage update

Eversource is reporting 12,892 outages in Connecticut including: Guilford, 2,566, Ledyard, 1,408, Old Lyme, 746, and Wilton, 919.

UI is reporting 1,233 outages.

Sunday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. High near 67. Breezy, with a northeast wind 17 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
