Mystery Of 3 Deaths At Burlington Home In June To Remain Unsolved: State Police

BURLINGTON, CT — How did three people whose skeletal remains were found in a Burlington home in June die?

That will remain a mystery.

State police announced at a Wednesday press conference they have concluded their investigation, but weren’t able to determine exactly what happened to the family.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner previously identified the three people as Paul Cash, 55, Sally Ann Cash, 54, and their son, Brian Cash, 22.

On Wednesday, the medical examiner’s office said the cause and manner of their deaths remains “undetermined.”

The family’s skeletal remains were found in their house at 7 Stanwich Lane on June 14, according to state police.

“There were no signs of struggle or forced entry,” said Det. Ashley Padua.

She said investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of the family’s deaths.

Officials previously said both foul play and carbon monoxide poisoning had been ruled out.

Officials have also said malnutrition or hypothermia from cold exposure could have been factors.

On Wednesday, state police said these two factors still can’t be ruled out. However, they can’t conclusively say either led to the trio’s deaths.

Investigators also couldn’t determine exactly when they died, though the last confirmed contact with Sally Ann had been Sept. 23, 2025. According to police, the family led a “very secluded” lifestyle, and rarely interacted with anyone outside the home, including neighbors or relatives.

Officials said the three people were all found inside sleeping bags, even though the house had beds. The bodies had multiple layers of clothing on them. Investigators found very little food in the house, except for some powdered milk, according to Lt. Thomas Ehret.

State police on Wednesday urged people to check on their neighbors, and if they “see something, say something.” There are programs available to help people who need assistance with food or heat, and people can dial 211 or visit 211ct.org.

Town records show the property’s most recent owners had been Paul and Sally Cash.

A new homebuyer, who had purchased the structure “as is” at a foreclosure auction, found the remains, state police said.

The Cash family had purchased the property in 2019, town records show.

Paul Cash was originally from the U.K., and his body was identified through dental records from the Royal Air Force, where he had been enlisted in the late 80s, police said.

Brian Cash had been homeschooled for his entire life, according to police.

A mortgage foreclosure action had been initiated against the homeowners in August 2025, according to state Judicial Branch records, and the family failed to appear during the proceedings, court records show.
