Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Lead To Flooding Concerns For CT: New Details Released

Find out the latest timeline for wet weather, according to meteorologists.

Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast for today, with a risk for flooding in poor drainage areas, according to meteorologists.

The National Weather Service reports widespread rain will move in this afternoon, from west to east.

“Periods of heavy rain (are) possible later today through tonight,” the National Weather Service said. “Some of the rain may be moderate to locally heavy at times.”

WTNH predicts a “soaking rain” this afternoon and evening.

“We could really use the rain,” WTNH said. “Our latest drought monitor maps shows most of the state now in moderate drought, with severe drought conditions across parts of lower Fairfield County and southeastern New London County.”

There is also a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

WTNH says there is a “low threat for a few strong to severe storms, mainly across southwestern Connecticut.”

The rain will continue tonight and into Tuesday before tapering off, meteorologists predict. While the state needs the rain, we could get too much at once, resulting in flooding concerns, according to meteorologists.

Any flooding is expected to be minor, and will mostly be a concern in urban and low drainage areas, the National Weather Service said.

“By Tuesday morning, many locations may receive 1–2 inches of rain, with isolated higher amounts possible where heavier bands persist,” WTNH said.

WFSB predicts periods of pouring rain this afternoon, and it is calling today a “First Alert Weather Day.”

“Showers arrive around lunchtime across central and eastern CT, trending heavier for the afternoon and evening hours with even some thunder possible,” WFSB reports.

WFSB anticipates the rain will be slow to exit the state, with a chance for scattered showers lingering into Tuesday afternoon.

“By the time we’re all said-and-done, 0.5-1.5″ of beneficial rainfall is likely, with locally higher amounts not out of the question,” WFSB reports.

High temperatures today will reach into the mid to upper 70s.
