Asian Bakery Owner Closes Avon Shop, Cites 'Personal Attacks'

AVON, CT — A fledgling, Asian-owned bakery/coffee shop that only opened in Avon about a year ago has now closed.

The Chan Bakeshop closed its Avon location, according to the owner Thursday.

Owner and pastry chef Chan Vorasane-Graham said she decided to shutter the operation after struggling to attract customers and experiencing what she described as "personal attacks" against the business.

The bakery at 304 W. Main St. closed Thursday, Vorasane-Graham announced on Facebook.

“It is with much sadness that I have decided to close this location as of today,” Vorasane-Graham wrote. “I had put my heart and soul into making the location warm and welcoming, but it was to no avail.”

Chan Bakeshop, which also operates at 50 Berlin Road in Cromwell, expanded to Avon in the summer of 2025.

Vorasane-Graham said she spent about a year trying to introduce Avon customers to the bakery's distinctive baked goods and beverages.

“After a year of trying to bring people from Avon to try my unique baked goods and beverages not found in any other bakeshop in the area and after numerous nasty personal attacks toward my bakeshop, I realized this was not the area to continue doing business here,” she wrote.

Vorasane-Graham did not elaborate in the announcement on the nature of the alleged attacks or identify who was responsible for them.

She thanked customers who patronized the Avon shop and said she hopes they will continue visiting the Cromwell location.

A native of Laos, Vorasane-Graham has described Chan Bakeshop as specializing in “handcrafted, high-quality baked goods inspired by timeless flavors.”

The bakery's offerings include pastries and other baked goods, as well as coffee and tea drinks, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch options.

While the Avon storefront has closed, Chan Bakeshop's Cromwell location remains at 50 Berlin Road.
