In February 2025, that was clear during a special "Fighting Cancer Pasta Buffet" that helped raise money to help Theriault's fight.

“Deputy Chief Dave Theriault dedicated his entire life to serving this department and the Town of Avon,” said AVFD Chief Bruce Appell in a statement. “From the time he joined, Dave was a constant presence — reliable, selfless, and deeply committed to the people around him. He led by example, cared fiercely for his fellow firefighters, and gave more than most will ever know. Our department has lost a leader, a mentor, and a friend, and our hearts are with Dave’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Theriault joined the Avon Volunteer Fire Department as an explorer at the age of 14 and served the department for nearly 35 years, rising through the ranks to the role of deputy chief.

"Throughout his career, he was a steady and respected presence within the Department, known for his dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to service," wrote the AVFD in a statement on Friday.

During his fire service career, some of Deputy Chief Theriault’s notable accomplishments included:

  • Serving as an explorer advisor
  • Promotion to special operations captain
  • Chair of the AVFD 75th Anniversary Committee

  • Most Training Hours for Support Firefighter (2024-25)

"Known for his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to others, Deputy Chief Theriault had a lasting impact on generations of firefighters and community members. His guidance, steadiness, and care for those around him helped shape the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and the town he served for his entire life," the department continued in a statement.

"The department respectfully asks that the family’s privacy be honored during this difficult time. Funeral and memorial service details will be shared once arrangements have been finalized.
The officers and members of the Avon Volunteer Fire Department mourn the loss of Deputy Chief Theriault and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him."
