Avon To Help Kids, Parents Navigate Phone/Social Media Safety

Avon's 'Take Back Your Time' series will offer five programs on phone and social media safety for youths ages 9-14 and caregivers.

AVON, CT — A new series of programs in Avon will focus on helping young people and their caregivers navigate phones, social media, privacy, and other challenges associated with technology.

The "Take Back Your Time" series is designed for youths ages 9 to 14 and their caregivers and will run from October through November.

All events begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Free Public Library, 281 Country Club Road, according to the program announcement.

The schedule includes:

  • Thursday, Oct. 8: "The Amazing Generation" book discussion with separate teen and adult groups.
  • Oct. 19: Zoom author talk with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge.
  • Oct. 28: Teen New Hobby Night and an adult author talk.
  • Nov. 12: Teen Rebel Night Hangout and an adult question-and-answer session with Greater Hartford Wellness.
  • Nov. 18: Community talk-back with teens and adults.

The series will bring together local librarians and experts from Avon Youth Services, Interval House and Greater Hartford Wellness.

along with authors in psychology and therapy-related fields.

Organizers said discussions will focus on helping young people protect their privacy, attention, and "brainspace" while developing skills and hobbies and spending time with friends and family away from screens.

The announcement directs participants to check the program calendar for individual event locations and times.

The series is sponsored by the Avon Education Foundation and is being promoted in partnership with the Avon Free Public Library and Greater Hartford Wellness.
