Expecting Flames, Avon FD Hit With Flood: AVFD

AVON, CT — Avon Volunteer Fire Department crews prevented significant property damage this week after discovering a burst pipe while responding to what initially appeared to be a routine smoke detector alarm.

According to the department, firefighters arrived at the scene Tuesday expecting a standard alarm investigation at a local commercial building, but instead found water pouring from around a sealed rear door of the building.

Crews forced entry into the room and discovered a large broken pipe that had flooded the area with several feet of water, the department said.

Firefighters quickly located and shut off the building’s main water valve, stopping further flooding and limiting damage to the property.

The department said the incident underscored the unpredictable nature of emergency response work and the importance of firefighter training.

“You never truly know what’s on the other side of the door until you get there,” the department stated in a social media post Thursday.

The Avon Volunteer Fire Department also used the incident to encourage residents interested in public service to consider joining the department as volunteer firefighters.
