Historic Avon Schoolhouse Unveiling Postponed Due To Impending Storm: UPDATE

AVON, CT — The historic Pine Grove Schoolhouse will eventually open its doors to the public to give visitors a chance to see newly completed interior renovations and witness the opening of a decades-old time capsule.

It just won't happen this weekend as planned.

Thanks to a dire weather forecast of wind and rain, the open house scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the 1865 Pine Grove Schoolhouse, 3 Harris Road, will not happen.

Citing the predicted storm, the Avon Historical Society decided to move the date of the event to next year, though no new date has been finalized.

"Out of respect for Mother Nature, we’re ringing the final school bell on the newly renovated Pine Grove Schoolhouse for the season. We will reopen in May 2027 with a grand re-opening party that might include other improvements that will see us staying open year-round from then on," said Avon Historical Society President Terri Wilson in a statement to Patch.

A highlight of the event, when it does happen, will be the opening of a 1976 time capsule.

Visitors will also be able to tour the renovated interior, and gift bags and refreshments will be available.

The Pine Grove Schoolhouse operated from 1865 to 1949 and is maintained by the Avon Historical Society.

The open house was to be sponsored by Thomas Mach Interiors LLC of Simsbury and Farrow & Ball Paint & Paper.

According to the historical society, selected renovations were also supported by Delmonte and Martha Davis in memory of Arline Judd Olsen and by Pat Moran in memory of Harriet Moran.
