AVON, CT — A 29-year-old Avon man faces additional charges in an ongoing investigation into alleged sexual misconduct involving children at a local daycare center, police said.

Officers with the Avon Police Department responded March 31 to the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center after an administrator reported suspected inappropriate contact between a staff member and a child the previous day.

Following an initial investigation, police obtained an arrest warrant for Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero, 29, of Avon.

Detectives have since secured additional arrest warrants tied to what police described as six incidents involving five children, police said on Friday, April 24.

Berrios-Otero now faces multiple additional counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor.

The APD said he will also be charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor due to the number of alleged victims under age 13, according to police.

Authorities said he is expected to be arraigned on the new charges in Torrington "in the near future."

The investigation remains ongoing, and police are urging parents with concerns to contact detectives or the Child Abuse Investigation Team of Northwest Connecticut.

In a separate statement, a spokesperson for BrightPath said Thursday the Avon facility on Simsbury Road will close May 22.

The company cited recent "disruptions" and said the decision was made with families in mind.
