Protecting Fireflies/Moths Topic Of Avon Program

AVON, CT — Gardeners interested in making their yards friendlier to fireflies, moths and other nighttime insects can learn more at an upcoming Garden Club of Avon program.

"Gardening for the Nightshift: Fireflies & Moths" will be presented Monday, Sept. 14, at the Church of St. Ann's Father Bennett Hall in Avon.

Lisa Newell will discuss the basic ecology of fireflies and moths and steps gardeners can take to help the insects survive.

Topics will include planting native species, providing shelter, and avoiding pesticide use.

Newell is an ambassador for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and volunteers in education and outreach roles.

She has a master's degree in public health and has spent the past 20 years working as a professional gardener, lecturer, and native plant grower, according to the Garden Club of Avon.

In 2022, Newell started Rewind, a native plant nursery in Simsbury.

The Garden Club of Avon member meeting begins at 11:30 a.m., with guests arriving at noon for a light lunch and the program.

Reservations are required, and the guest fee is $15, payable at the door by cash or check.
