Beloved Berlin Police Canine Calls It A Career

BERLIN, CT — After more than nine years of tracking suspects, visiting schools and making appearances throughout the community, one of the Berlin Police Department's four-legged officers has worked his final patrol shift.

K9 Casner has officially retired from police duty on Monday, the department announced.

"Last night, after over 9 years of service to the town of Berlin, K9 Casner worked his last shift on patrol!" police said. "K9 Casner has been an incredible presence around Berlin throughout his career, and he will be missed greatly."

The Town of Berlin also marked Casner's retirement, highlighting both his police work and his popularity in the community.

Casner became known for his tracking abilities as well as an unmistakable howl when police lights and sirens were activated, according to the town.

His work extended beyond patrol duties.

Casner regularly made appearances at Berlin schools, Girl Scout gatherings, sporting events, and other community activities, where he spent time with local children.

"Casner's impact went far beyond police work," the town said. "He has been a staple in our community."

Town officials also thanked Casner's handler, officer Aimee Krzykowski, for the pair's nearly decade-long service to Berlin.

The Berlin Police Department wished Casner well as he traded patrol shifts for retirement.

"Thank you for your service; enjoy all the perks of retirement!" the department said.

The town is also inviting residents to share their favorite photographs of Casner from his years serving the community.
