Labor Day 2026 In Berlin, What's Open? What's Closed

BERLIN, CT — Berlin officials have announced multiple closures locally related to the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

As a result, Berlin residents should expect changes to town services and trash collection because of the Labor Day holiday.

All Town of Berlin departments will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

There will also be no trash or recycling collection Monday, according to the town.

Trash and recycling pickups will be delayed by one day because of the holiday.

Residents whose regular collection day is Monday should therefore expect pickup Tuesday, with subsequent collections also occurring one day later.

The Berlin-Peck Memorial Library will be closed on Saturday, Sept. 5, and Monday, Sept. 7, for the Labor Day weekend. The library is regularly closed on Sundays.

Berlin schools are closed on Labor Day as well, with classes resuming the next day on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Holiday history

The holiday was born out of the nation's labor movement and has since evolved into the notion of summer's last hurrah for all.

It is always the first Monday in September and, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, it is "an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers."

"The holiday is rooted in the late 19th century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," reads the U.S. Department of Labor website.
