West Nile Virus Detected In Bethel Mosquito

BETHEL, CT — A mosquito collected in Bethel has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the town's first positive test this year, according to local health officials.

The positive mosquito was detected Aug. 13 at Meckauer Park through the Connecticut Mosquito Trapping and Arbovirus Testing Program, according to an update from the Bethel Health Department shared by the town.

Officials said 627 mosquitoes have been tested at Meckauer Park, with one testing positive for West Nile virus.

The town said 67 positive mosquito tests have been reported across Connecticut this summer.

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions against mosquito bites, including eliminating standing water around their homes and using measures to prevent bites while outdoors.
